Welcome to the Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt! If you’ve just discovered the hunt, be sure to start at Stop #1, and collect the clues through all the stops, in order, so you can enter to win one of our top 5 grand prizes!
-
The hunt BEGINS on 4/10 at noon Mountain with Stop #1 at LisaTawnBergren.com.
-
Hunt through our loop using Chrome or Firefox as your browser (not Explorer).
-
There is NO RUSH to complete the hunt—you have all weekend (until Sunday, 4/13 at midnight Mountain)! So take your time, reading the unique posts along the way; our hope is that you discover new authors/new books and learn new things about them.
-
Submit your entry for the grand prizes by collecting the CLUE on each author’s scavenger hunt post and submitting your answer in the Rafflecopter form at the final stop, back on Lisa’s site. Many authors are offering additional prizes along the way!
Welcome, friend! I’m Joanna and I love Jesus and great stories. They’ve labeled me an author of romance, mystery, and even gothic fiction, but really I just love telling a good story—especially one that surprises the reader. When I’m not coming up with twisty, secretive, plots set in big old English manor houses, I’m homeschooling my three young children or welcoming people from all walks of life who see our little house in the woods as a sanctuary. I love it that way. Connect with me on Instagram, Facebook, or my private reader group.
My newest release is The Curious Inheritance of Blakely House. Here’s what it’s about:
A clever young woman, a contested will, and an estate that does not easily give up its secrets.
It is 1901 when clockmaker and tinker Sydney Forrester receives a most unusual inheritance. Blakely House, the island estate of an estranged uncle she’s never met, seems almost alive, revealing and hiding its secrets at will. It is filled with remarkable inventions, including an intriguing unfinished automaton Sydney is itching to get her skilled hands on.
The estate is also home to a number of peculiar people–including two men intent on removing this interloper from the island. Convinced that Sydney has something to do with their uncle’s death, the late master’s nephews contest the will and work against their cousin at every turn.
Sydney finds a sometimes-ally in the estate’s butler, an ex-adventurer who ran aground on the island years ago. But when a mysterious man washes ashore with a stunning surprise that upsets everything, Sydney must prove she has inherited the late master’s brilliance as well as his property–or someone else will.
Speaking of clocks and gadgets, many were successful in this era, but there were some major flops! Have you heard of these?”
Eyeglasses for horses: A London firm of opticians discovered that even horses can become nearsighted over time, and blamed horses becoming spooked or agitated on this problem. Thus, equine spectacles were invented to solve the problem. They looked more like goggles with bifocal lenses, covering the horse’s entire eye. For a time, these spectacles became popular with the high-stepping carriage horses of the wealthy.
The fanned rocking chair: This was an outdoor chair that consisted of a small rotary fan overhead, worked by pinions and gears that were powered by the rocking motion. It failed because, not only was the chair itself uncomfortable, but the delicate gears that kept it working also made it heavy enough to fall on too many heads.
Reading chair: Built with the chair “back” on the front of the chair, along with a wide C-shaped armrest unit and book stand, these chairs were made for one purpose only—reading. The user leaned forward against the “back” of the chair (which was in front) and the c-shaped armrests, placing his or her forehead on a leather-lined headrest and read the book that was propped up in front of them on the stand.
Electric jewels: Always on a journey to stand out, ladies were offered a sensational jewelry design that included tiny incandescent lights built within broaches or pins. These tiny electric lights, hidden within the center of the piece, gave it a twinkle meant to catch the eye. It failed because of the small burns left on a few wearers’ clothing (although the maker argued it was user error).
